Sealant is applied to natural stone or concrete to protect it from surface damage, corrosion, and staining. They either block the pores in the concrete or natural stone to reduce absorption of water and salts or form an impermeable layer which prevents such materials from passing. Most natural stone or concrete damage is attributable to surface moisture intrusion. The most pervasive form of damage is surface scaling from freeze/thaw. Other forms of damage include alkali-silica reaction (ASR), chemical intrusion, and corrosion of steel reinforcements.
Topical Sealants: Topical Sealers can provide visual enhancement as well as topical protection from stains and chemicals. They require a dry, clean surface during application to gain adhesion. Topical sealers may alter the coefficient of friction which can make substrates slick when wet – a condition that can be remedied by adding anti-skid materials. Lifespan is generally 1-5 years.
Penetrating Sealants: Penetrating sealers can be applied to dry or damp surfaces and should be properly matched with substrate porosity in order to effectively penetrate the surface and react. The chemical reaction bonds active ingredients within the substrate blocking surface moisture. Penetrating sealers generally do not significantly modify substrate appearance or traction. Lifespan is generally 5 years or more.
Sealant For Your Internal & External Projects
We have direct to the manufacturer selling contracts for some of the best cement and natural stone sealants on the market today. Therefore, on most orders, we can beat the prices of our competitors that are currently on the internet. We would recommend that you ask for the correct sealant for your project and a quote when you are enquiring about your cladding product. Note: that most of our cement based products won’t need a sealant as they already have had a sealant additive added in the manufacturing process.
Brickslipit.com has consulted with many of our preferred installers and have selected a range of sealants that will be suitable for most construction and renovation projects. These products have been trialled and tested in most building environments by our installers and have proven to have an exceptional practical test record. Both in application and coverage.
